Maxwell's
Equations

Four short lines of vector calculus that fold electricity and magnetism into a single field — and reveal that light itself is a ripple in that field.

E electric field // B magnetic field — perpendicular, in phase, racing forward at c

01

Gauss's Law

// differential form
// integral form

Electric charge is the source of the electric field. Field lines begin and end on charge.

02

Gauss's Law for Magnetism

// differential form
// integral form

There are no magnetic monopoles. Every field line that leaves must return — closed loops only.

03

Faraday's Law of Induction

// differential form
// integral form

A changing magnetic field winds up an electric field. This is how every generator on Earth works.

04

Ampère–Maxwell Law

// differential form
// integral form

Currents and changing electric fields both curl up a magnetic field. Maxwell's added term closed the loop.

// the consequence

Take the curl of a curl in empty space, and the fields obey a wave equation.

The speed of that wave is fixed entirely by two constants of the vacuum — the permeability μ₀ and the permittivity ε₀:

Maxwell computed that number and found it equal to the measured speed of light. Electricity, magnetism, and optics were one subject all along.
